While the
Hawklands and
their plantation home, Rosehall, are fictional, the plantations of Belle
View and
Angola
are real. This area, the confluence of
Mississippi
and
Red
Rivers
, was an important location throughout the war, particularly for
Confederate Communication, transportation, and trade.
The Harriet Lane
was converted to a blockade runner by the Confederates, but was never able
to leave
Galveston
Bay
due to the Federal blockade. Years later she was renamed the Elliot
Ritchie, and was eventually lost at sea.
The Battle of Galveston restored the island and its harbor to
Confederate control and dealt a severe blow to the confidence of the
Federal Navy, who never attempted its recapture.
